Granddaughter (9 next month) wanted to turn a pen for her teacher. She is getting better and did most of turning with very little hand holding. After doing 2 pens, she said can we turn a bowl now. What can one say to that? The little expanding collet from PSI works well for these small bowls. I just need to make a shorter handle bowl gouge to work the inside. I do use a 1/4" Thompson spindle gouge ground as a bowl gouge that has a short handle, but that is a little hard for small hands. Bowl is maple, 3" D x 3/4" H x 1/8" WT.

Thomas tell she did very well and I am sure the teacher will love them. But better than that is the time spent with them. It is absolutely priceless. She looks like a happy camper for sure.

You need to frame that photo and put it up in the shop. It will make you grin for years to come!

I have a photo of my 7 year old son (now 23 and in grad school) grinning with a 24 inch brook trout he caught, fought, and landed on a fly he tied himself. That big old grin of his makes me smile every time I sit down to tie flies as it hangs just above my desk. I'll never forget that day no matter what!

Go frame it and enjoy the memories.

Thanks for comments. Now I just have to learn how to turn a photo when posting. Hopefully a few more bowls will really get her sucked into the vortex.
