I just read this and wanted to pass it along. From November 2010 Readers Digest.
"found that baking soda eliminated smells most effectively, beating out detergent, water, bleach and a lemon dipped in salt. The reason: Baking soda is water soluble and is more easily absorbed, enabling it to neutralize the organic acids in the utensils." from Cooks Illustrated.
Maybe this is only for wooden spoons used in cooking, don't know.
