I am looking for suggestions on secondary containers for varnish.

I am seeing two problems with the quart cans:

The lids don't seem to seal very well, no matter how hard I try.

If I do get a good seal, there is enough head space to create a film at
the top.

What do you suggest as a secondary container?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, the absolutely best practice is to only buy enough varnish to do the job since once the original container is opened, the shelf life can tick away quickly. If you must use a secondary container, something with a screw top and a seal would be the best bet and small enough that there is little or no air-space prior to closing. Do keep in mind that light is also to be avoided for stored finish. Some folks have had good luck with oxygen displacement by inert gas ("Bloxygen", etc) to help with the filming issue.

I use glass mason jars. I learned the hard way that they are only available at Walmart during certain times of the year, who knew?

I put plumbers teflon tape on the glass threads to make opening the jar easier. I leave no air in the jar I sometimes use Bloxygen most of the time I top it off with mineral spirits.
