This little HF is 10X7.25. Has some spalting in the sapwood which I just could not make myself turn away in favor of an all heartwood piece. Has 8-10 coats of gloss poly and 3 wheel buffed...Bill...

Nice work, Bill, and some more of that nice walnut you have! You WOP guys have converted me - great finish.

Great looking HF, Bill. How did you deal with the pith? Drill it out and plug it or leave it or what?

Nice, reminds me of a nice shiny candy apple.

Richard I leave the pith in place. All gets turned away except the bottom which I soak in CA. Never lost one from a pith crack...Bill...

Very nice! I love the pith down the center type hollow forms and the way they allow a cross section of the entire tree to show. Then the spalting is just a little icing on the cake.

Nice work on a beautiful piece Bill. I do like the form and finial.

That's really nice. I like the form and the treatment around the opening. It's a bit on the shiny side for my personal taste, but it's certainly a beautiful finish.

Pretty HF. This is a great way to show off the spalting all the way around the outside.

Bill, I'd be interested to hear more about the CA soak. Do you turn once to finish and get the tenon off right away and then soak, or is the tenon and inside soaked in CA and then dried and re-turned? I've tried drilling and plugging with kind of mixed results. That's why I'm curious.

Nice job...again:D! The collar looks like an add on - is it different wood or just the photo lighting??? With all the shiny walnut on the page I guess Im gonna have to try a hi gloss piece and see how that plays out.
Thanks for the post

Michael: One piece. The lid portion of the finial starts at the second character line up.
Richard: Once I finish the form I reverse it to clean up the bottom and cut in two lines for my signature. That is when I soak the pith area with ca. On Walnut the pith usually has a small hole dead center. A little sanding dust then ca and a final sand before the signature.
