The card board box we kept our sewing kit in was too small and falling apart, so I decided to make a quick round box from some scraps. The body is red ash, the lid a scrap of 5/4 cherry, and the knob osage orange from the firewood pile. I used a wire to burn in some "thread" on the bobbin/spool echoing body. It was quick work, and not sanded to the nth my any means. It's finished with some BLO and wax. Thanks for looking.

I am sure not letting the LOML see this. She doesn't sew but she sure has a lot of little trinkets and things to but in boxes.

That's a real beauty.

Sean, I LOVE this piece!!! Really!! It has so much potential for variation, and just a great idea. Very nice work.

I quickly envisioned a lamination of the box itself - curly maple base and top rim, with a walnut waist! Top it with a walnut lid - perhaps an ebony knob, or even curly maple with an ebony inset in the top of the knob. Hmmmmm....... got the juices flowing with this one! Hope you don't mind if I take some liberties with the idea.

Very nice. Like John said - lot of potential to vary the design. How about a tortilla holder?

Wow - now that's a cool idea! Nice turning Sean! Like the others - I can see where the basic form here would have lots of room for variation!

Nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Great looking box Sean. As others have said the variations are possible. My wife sews and I am not sure I want to show here this one because I will be making several.

Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments. This was one of the times when I had a very loose idea in my head and just kept up the perpendicular designing (i.e., making it up while the wood is spinning on lathe).

John, take all the liberties you want. I'd love to see other people's versions of a round box. While I didn't copy anything I'd seen consciously, I am certain that turners have been making similar forms for decades, if not centuries. I got no copyright, nor do I even wish for one.

Thanks again, all!

Excellent idea. Not to mention a nice job. My spouse has hers in a Tupperware container. I do believe I'm gonna make one of those. And score some major brownie points at the same time. :D

Sean,

Woo hooo, hooooo! That is so creative.......I really think it is such a neat idea to give it a bobbin form, and great turning also!

That is a keeper for sure, and it will be such a hit with the ladies! You may have started something here! I think we will see some additional turnings along this line posted on SMC before long. ;)

Hello Sean,
Beautiful sewing box, practical !
But ........
never say it with scrapwood out the firewood pile
never
it is with a specially selected wood
just for this purpose
just for your wife!

right?

Very nice twist to the turned box! Never played with turned boxes yet but definitely on my to do list once I can catch my tail again in a couple months.

Sean, I really like this idea and the box. I think that's the kind of item that will be coveted for generations to come...an heirloom. Good job; well done!

Sean, that is amazing!!! What are the dimensions if I may ask...and I'll tell right now, as others have stated...I'm probably going to make something similar:o:o

Thanks! The dimensions of the main body are around 9 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" tall. That said, I don't think it would matter much if you made one bigger or smaller; i.e., these sizes are not crucial in any way. I didn't plan or ever measure in making it.
