View Full Version : Cheap router bit rant

This afternoon I broke two router bits (brand new) in a Jointech set...a 5/16" straight bit, and a 1/4" straight. I may have been asking too much of the 5/16, but after breaking that one (snapped off right at the top of the shank), I was taking 1/8" deep cuts with the 1/4" bit...in a hole already rough plowed by the 5/16" bit. There's no excuse for the second one breaking, other than it's a cheap POS. This may explain how they can sell this set of about 12 bits for less than $20.

For comparison, I was cutting dados in table legs. The two 'Jointech' bits lasted not quite 2-1/2 legs. I have a Whiteside (I think) 1/4" shank that I used to make the same cuts on 8 legs for a desk...and made the 5/16' deep cuts in one pass. I'd use that one to finish up this job, but it's a 1/4" shank and I don't have the right collett for the big PC router.

I really like Whiteside the best! Amana and Viper are very good too. I have had Freuds that vibrate...I just chipped the blade on a Woodline top bearing on the ash bed. They are sending me a new one...free! They stand behind it, but it is not Whiteside

I've had problems with poor carbide on a 45 deg bevel Viper bit. Probably just a fluke.

CMT sets the standard that every other company tries to aheive. But few come close! Like you said, you get what you pay for.

There are several good brands to choose from. here is a list of most of them

CMT
Freud
Amana
Eagle America
Infinity
Jesada

Then the second teir

MLCS
Magnate
Viper

There are others. But stay away from the $2 router bits. They can get you hurt, or even worse!

I buy whiteside almost 99 percent of the time. Great bits. I get them from Ballew Tools, or Routerbits. com
