View Full Version : New Shallow Walnut Bowl

I got a bunch of blanks ready with some glue blocks this weekend and here is a shallow bowl I made today from one of the blanks.

Two things with this walnut. First I got it at an estate sale and now found out why it was so cheap. The pith runs almost down the middle. I was able to clean it up on one side but not the other and I hope I got the crack filled with CA. If I had turned both sides out there wouldn't be anything left so I just left it.

The second thing about this walnut is that I just don't have the right lighting for taking pictures of it being so dark. :( That other woods aren't that great either in my pictures but at least you can see the color and anything that is in the wood like curly figure. This walnut is just beautiful and has a lot of curl in it but it sure don't show it in the pictures.

Anyways, it started out 8-1/2" x 2" and by the time I got the pith out it is now 7-1/4" x 1-1/2". I left it kind of thick and didn't want to turn all the CA out of it and hope it doesn't crack anymore. I'm happy and the wife is happy so I guess that's what matters.

Thanks for looking

The figure in that walnut looks so good. Like you, I hope it doesn't crack, maybe that CA will prevent it. Glad you found it.

What amazing figure in that walnut, Dick. I think that the most incredible part of turning is the discovery of what lies inside a blank.

This one is a feast for the eyes.
