Woodworkers Source (www.woodworkerssource.com) is having a sale on the basic Sjoberg bench. $299 with free shipping. I checked Woodcraft's Web site and it looks as if the complete bench is cheaper than a comparable top from there. The free shipping makes the deal that much better. According to the Website, they only have 100 for sale. I ordered mine, so that leaves 99 for everyone else.

My wife and I just discussed my building a workbench after I finish my current project of a desk for my daughter. I was looking at building a cheap bench out of pine when I saw this thread. I showed her the bench and she handed me her credit card and said Merry Christmas.

For anyone interested, Amazon has what appears to be the same bench for $199 with free shipping and also eligible for a $25 additional discount for tool purchases $199 or over.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000C6DYR/qid%3D1105337493/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/104-2717049-6567137

If that long link doesn't work, go to www.amazon.com and search for Sjoberg by JET 710002/JPB-4 Solid Beech Workbench

One is 21" x 54", the Amazon is 21" x 48"--
according to the JET 2004 catalog; still a great deal!

For tulsa people the local retool has what i think is the same bench for $249. I think im going to make my own out of pine and put some $ into a joiner.

Woodworkerssource has it listed at 54" "with the tail vice open" and 49" otherwise.

Amazon has the model listed as the Jet 710002 Workbench, but has no other technical info on it.

Looking at a google search on "710002 bench" it appears that the dimensions for the on on amazon is 4' (aka 48"). So I'm guessing that they are one in the same.

Wow, 174.99 with tax and shipping for a finished bench INCLUDING both vises. I just can't pass that up.

Robert, I was going to build my own 1st bench out of pine too as a precurser to building my first true bench once I got my feet wet and learned what I needed in a workbench. But for the cost of the pine and the hardware, I can't justify it now. Might be able to DIY for a bit less $$$, but it would be a softwood bench.

I'll focus on building an underbench storage box to house tools and weight it down. I'm guessing that it's going to need it at 80lbs. shipping weight.

I think this is going to sound like a dumb question because of the good reputation that Sjoberg has, but I'm going to ask anyway. Boy am I glad I'm typing "Sjoberg" and not trying to pronounce it.

I have never seen one of these in person, is that base sturdy? -- It just doesn't *look* like it is. As I said, because of the reputation I'm sure it is, it just looks like it would wobble from the pictures.

I wasnt too impressed with the stand considering the bench isnt all that heavy either. I would toss the stand and make your own or use something heavy to weight it down.

The bench can be bought as a top only and you can build your own. This is what Mr. Becker, the previous owner of my Sjoberg bench did. I think it is pronounced Joberg or maybe Yoberg or could be SHoberg or I don't knowberg. I like the bench though.

Of course the price had to go down:mad: . I received my bench from woodworkersource on Thursday. It is the jet 4 foot bench. The change in dimensions on the WWS website came about after I emailed them and told them that the benches were not 54 inches as advertised.

Overall, I a pleased with the bench. It hase been a big help in my current project and it works well as an outfeed table for my tablesaw.

Agree. I bought that top a few years ago but BUILT my own base etc. Other furnished base didn't look too sturdy for me. Works fine and good quality!

So I am hearing the bench is worth $174.99, but throw away the base ?

The Amazon reviews for the bigger cousin of this bench, the one for $349, say the bench top is actually only about an inch thick, and that it only looks thick because of that apron.

How about a net value of 74.99?

This bench (the Sjorberg/Jet 4' Beech Workbench) acts as an "Initial Qualifying Machine" for the Jet/Powermatic/Performax $100 of your next purchase rebate plan.

Looking over the rebate info that amazon lists on the sale page for the workbench, it's good to go.

I was looking at buying a Performax 22-44 (as recommended by Jim Becker) anyways, independent of seeing the Sjoberg on clearance, so this workbench purchase will drop the drum sander's cost by $100. Nice deal!

Overall.. a net savings of $100. So you can look at this bench as a $74.99 acquisition if you were already about to make a Jet/Powermatic/Performax tool purchase.

Hope this helps,
/Kevin

Tell you guys what.... Since I am sitting about 1/2 mile away from Wood Workers Source I will take a run down there and take a look at the work bench. (For once I happen to be close to a deal, of course its not a fallen quilted maple tree but still :D)

Michael, that sounds like a good plan, but remember the bench is 174.99 at Amazon, I think the special price at WWS is $299. Just repeating this in case you missed the thread change, I would hate for all of us to owe you $125 :)

Ok here is the deal... The bench if you are in Phoenix is $249, the $299 is if you are having it shipped via UPS and claimed retail is 549. The majority of the top is 1 inch and 2 7/8" aprons around the perimiter, so that it appears to be thicker than it really is. The bench dogs are metal with a plastic coating and little spring loaded ball bearings so the dogs do not slip out. The legs are about 3/4" beech and one leg has mortices for a door jack (I think that is what it's called) at different heights. The legs are attached with what looks like M&T and screwed in like what you would use for attaching bed rails.

The vices have 2 holes for bench dogs and there are 2 posts and a center screw. Mostly made of wood and just a little metal. The bench did not rack as much as I tried but I was able to move it around, and that was the larger one. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

I don't know if anyone else ordered the bench through Amazon but I got an email today indicating that they cannot supply and are thus canceling my order.

OT: reminds me of an old story about a guy that went into the hardware store to buy a hammer - clerk said it would be $20 - guy said the shop down the street has them for $5 - so the clerk says go down there to buy it - guy says they're out - clerk says when we're out, we've sell 'em for $4.

I am very dissapointed that this happened and sent an e-mail to Amazon with the problem that I have with them advertising something as in stock or at least orderable(is that a word) when in fact it is not. At my company we call that a very big problem with supply chain management.

I suggest that everyone that had this happen send them an e-mail as well.

Yup, I had this happen to me as well yesterday.

So there goes the $100 off my Performax 22-44 purchase too. Good thing I didn't buy it already, as the WMH plan allows you to buy the next item before mailing in the coupon from the 1st purchase. I kinda had a feeling that it may not work out, being Amazon and all.

Thing is that this wasn't a typical pricing mistake. It's in the printed, mailed January tool catalog priced at $199. I'm not sure what they did wrong to get into this problem.

Well... that's Amazon for you. They don't sell/service with loyalty in mind. They work on lowest price as the motivating factor. You dance with the devil when you deal with Amazon. Keep that in mind and it doesn't hurt as much after the 4th or 5th burn. :-)

Don't get me wrong. I find the practice unacceptable to. It's the freakin' internet... meaning Inter-networked... so they should know how many widgets they have to sell and how many they can get.

I guess that Amazon has blown the late 80's-90's concept of "just-in-time inventory control" into to the next stratosphere.

They have shown that their new concept is to sell an item to the customer before they buy it from a given supplier. Results in practically a zero overhead business model... at least for those items sold in that fashion.

Guess you can try to pull that off with a internet based business.

i wasnt too thrilled when i ordered three items on one order and was charged shipping from each vendor. if i place one order on a website i should only be charged for shipping once. I later ordered a dust collector and got good service and a good price. but i wont place an order again from multiple vendors. i am going to try and get most of what i need from the local woodcraft anyway.
