On my way home from work yesterday I paused at my local ironmongers which amongst other things (it's one of those proper and rapidly disappearing shops), sells second hand tools.

I was looking through the planes and saw a Marsh M5. I didn't look at it very closely as I don't need another 5, but it's a name I haven't come across and wondered where it fit in the larger scheme of things.

Cheers

Marsh was a tool firm out of Rockford IL. They made a very nice miter vise. They didn't make planes for very long but the ones they did make are nice, quite comparable to Stanley. Stanley bought them out to get ahold of their miter vise. I think stanley either cast marsh planes or sold the rest of the marsh stock because they continued to sell the M series for a while after the buyout. Unfortunately nobody cares about their rarity. They are good user tools.

Thanks James. I'll take a closer look at it the next time I call in to visit 'my' tools.
