I want to saw some logs into slabs. I need a log resaw sled or similar jig for holding a log steady and secure while sawing lengthwise on the band saw. Jig needs to handle logs in the 24" length and 12" diameter size range.

Anyone out there have plans for a log resaw sled? - John

No need for anything fancy. Mine is just a sheet of plywood with a 3/4X3/8 rail on the underside for the miter slot. Make it a little too wide on the left and rip it to width the first time you run it down the slot.

Here's a picture. That's about a 13" cut on a chunk of ash about 20" long.

Keep a wooden wedge handy as you may need it to hold the kerf open as you get deeper into the cut.

Resawing logs involves a lot of exposed band and potentially dangerous results if the log moves, the saw tips over, or something else goes wrong. Think it through before you start, make sure your mind is sharp while you're working, and don't take shortcuts.

Check out the wood magazine site. They have a jig with a sliding base I built one but need to make some additions (like a tape measure or ruler for incrementing the bed). If I have a chance I'll try to find and post a link.

There's lots of examples on the net. Here's one I like from American Woodworker Magazine.

I like the table extension. Any ideas how it is held to the saw?

Watch this video (2 parts) for a good view of a jig.

you don't necessarily need a sled. .. http://woodgears.ca/reclaim_lumber/bandsaw_log.html

but if you really want one, here is a simple one http://woodgears.ca/shop-tricks/bandsaw_sled.html

No, I couldn't find the issue that had it featured, only a blog post which referenced page 104.

I think I can figure out a method for securing the table, though. I like it too.

Charlie, it is times like this (your first link) that I wish I still had my POS HF 7" jointer. I wouln't care what I would run through it. I'm a little less likely to use that method for some reason now that I have a Byrd head on my DJ-20.

would it be possible to put a cheap head on that beast?
