woke up one morning with the idea of making a bowl. my first bowl attempt idk what the wood is got it free haven't taken any lessons or anything just kinda winged it i dont think i had even touched a piece of wood before 3 weeks ago. 6 1/4th x 2. shinny things are always great imo except for the finger prints. i used a delta 46-460 the only goal i have is to be turning +14'' bowls by xmas and pass them around to every one.

Welcome!

The wood is almost certainly redwood burl, and it's a very nice example at that. Add in the fact that you got it for free, and that's starting to sound gloatish.:D

I think it's a heck of an effort for a first bowl.

I hope you've got access to another lathe if you're looking to turn 14" bowls... The delta will max out at around 12".

Yep, redwood burl - and nice!! Very good bowl, Dave, and you have a great little lathe. But, alas, it ain't gonna do a 14" bowl!:(

I see an early Christmas present for you - a new lathe - and, just in time for all the PM and Jet sales.;) You should call Sean at Toolnut today and get a PM on the truck to you - unbelievable price and free shipping! That way, you can get those 14" bowls done for Christmas!:D

Wow, that's a whole lot better than my first 12 bowls. The wood is really nice too. I would suggest putting away any more of that 'good stuff' till you get a few more practice bowls out of the way. Not a thing wrong with that bowl ... but you sure don't want to waste 'good wood' on practice if you can avoid it.
I went thru some very nice blackline spalted poplar early on, making very plain shapes that really didn't do the wood justice. But...it's what I had available at the time.

That's a nice first bowl David. To echo some previous statements, practice on junk!!! That Redwood is expensive...normally. Pick the appropriate finish for the work. I have never been a fan of gloss finishes, the look of plastic isn't to my taste on wood. Now go jet a bigger lathe and keep up the good work!

Very nice! And, yup, you're gonna need a bigger boat...I mean lathe.

That's awesome... One bowl and a mustard on order. That's got to be some kind of vortex record!:D

I think there's a recent thread(still on first page) discussing sources for blanks, but if you're looking for practice wood, I'd find a local tree trimmer or someplace that sells firewood. Where are you located?
