The figure in the bowl is great. I, personally do not like glossy finishes but otherwise I think you have a fine turning.

It is beautiful! The glossy finish works well with this piece. I think you showed off the best this wood had to offer.

Brent, this bowl is striking - beautiful wood and finish and the form is very nice. Personally, I would have like the foot to be just a little bit lower, but that is strictly a personal opinion. What you have done works well on this excellent piece.

Brent, this is beautiful. When I first saw it I thought you had a chance of winning the contest.

Beautiful piece though I am not always a high gloss fan. Maybe less of a foot with a slight inward taper would be the only possible change I could see.

Brent, I liked this bowl from the get go. The form, the foot, the finish...all top notch. And that wood...beautiful!!!;)

It's a wonderful piece of wood, and I like the overall form. I'd like to see the foot a bit shorter, but I've got foot issues. Although the finish is beautiful, it's a bit shiny for my personal tastes. All in all, it's a really nice looking piece.

Could the large foot actually be just a reflection? The foot looks to be <1/8", but the light wood reflects back onto the shiny bowl making it appear like it's more than double that thickness.

Or am I talking out of my nether regions again?

To all - The foot is about 3/16 high but it is also undercut some as well. I chickened out when I was cleaning up the bottom from the glue block. This was my first real use of my vacuum system and I had no idea how well it would hold. My fear being a catch. Still working on the confidence of my skills... it will come with more turning.

Can you tell us your finishing technique? I personally love the high gloss and would like to achieve this myself.

This was a long one. I dont know if the problems I had contributed to the final result so I am going to give the entire story...

The first schedule I used was 1 coat of danish oil, dry, then 2nd coat of danish oil, wet sanding with the oil as a lube, wipe out, dry, then I applied a brushing lacquer. The first coat went on great but subsequent coats got worse each time. It never had any of the pop that I thought I would get nor any of the life it had even as bare wood. I had had this can of lacquer for a while so it might have been going south... so... out comes the sandpaper... back to wood.

Next round, I used Seal-a-cell, dry, then proceeded to apply about 5 coats of wipe on poly (satin), wet sanding to 1000 between coats. I wanted more of the chatoyance to come out so changed to gloss wipe on poly and added about 5 more coats again sanding to 1000. My wife said enough on the last coat. In person you can still see some of the faint drag marks from the cloth and I find the pores being a bit distracting for a gloss finish.

Brent, Beautiful wood, form and finish. Personally, this one looks good in gloss.:)

Brent that is a beauty. I do like the high gloss, simple form and the wood is awesome. Around here for some reason for decorative bowls I sell about 4 gloss to 1 satin or semi-gloss.

Probably should be glossy (shiney sells) but if for utility, less gloss shows off the beauty of the wood.
