A friend mailed me this piece of box elder and I wasn't sure what I could get out of it when I saw it. It had a lot of red in it but once I started turning it I found a bunch of curly floating around in there also. It is 4-1/2” high by 5” wide with a 1/8” high foot and the opening is 3”. The lip and sides are about ¼” thick but taper down to a heavy bottom to keep it from falling over. I have the weight so that if it does fall over, it straightens back up. ;)

The first couple of pictures is what it looked like before I started and the rest are with it finished. I used the 3 wheel buffing process on it after sanding to 600 grit and then 2400 micro mesh.

The little blank turned out kind of pretty. My wife has laid clam to it and said I had better never think of giving this away to anyone. Ya know, I think she means it. :D

Thanks for looking.

Dick, I can certainly see why the LOYL has laid claim to it! That's stunning!:) Looks to me like you did indeed put a lot of work into polishing it up real nice and purdy, too! Well done, my friend!:)

Dick, you always seem to find something pretty in the most unpromising pieces of wood. :D

Really lovely and when the wife wants to keep it I say "Yes, ma'm!" :D

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I guess I am really hooked on this turning machine and it is fun starting with something fairly flat and ending up with it round. Some day I will get better to where I will know what it is going to look like before I start a piece, but for now I let it be a surprise. :D

Very nice bowl Dick, What did you use for a finish to keep the red so bright ?
On mine I used Watco oil and Tung oil and the red got darker.
Thanks, Fred

Beautiful work Dick. That boxelder has such intense red coloring, it is no wonder LOYL claimed it.
