I am not sure what you mean by "lift" but I am not a big fan of shiney. Some pieces look better with a high gloss but I tend to be attracted to those pieces with organic character (defects?) and they look better without gloss.

Are they mutually exclusive?

I don't care for bowls that shine, but some hollow forms look nice with a deep shine.

People around here like shiney. I sell 3 or 4 shiney pieces for every one satin or semi-gloss piece I sell. I like satin myself but on some piece shiney is the way to go.
