I had the day off yesterday and I needed to go to Hearne Hardwoods and pick up some stock. My wife and youngest son tagged along for the ride. For anyone who has never been there, their access drive is about 100 yards long and off the the right hand side they have quite and number of piles of wood of varying species stickered to dry. They also frequently have some rough logs piled up awaiting their turn at the mill.

As we were pulling up, my wife looked out the window and said "you know, they really should clean up around here and throw that junk away". Hearne keeps a really neat and tidy operation so I asked "huh, what junk" and she gestured towards the piles and logs and said "all that junk, those piles and logs over there ". I then explained to her that one person's junk is another person's inventory and I was about to drop a decent sum of $$ on some of that "junk".

Thank God she doesn't go down to your workshop and help you clean up while you're busy elsewhere, eh? ;)

I live in NC, so I've only been to Hearne's once -- when my wife had a business trip to Baltimore, I tagged along, and went touring eastern PA.

If woodworking were a religion, Hearne's would be one of the great cathedrals.

When I was there, the access drive didn't have any stickered wood, but there were probably three dozen trunk-sections with huge burls just standing there, waiting to be sliced.

And some of the most beautiful wood I've seen in my five decades, was inside their barns on that day. Just incredible stuff.

And even though I was just some schlepp who was mostly there for the wood-porn, I was treated like I was special. So, not only do they have the best woods, they also know what customer service should be like.

Holy Moly if Hearne's looks junky I can't imagine what she would think of many lumber yards! Quite frankly though her observation makes sense for a non-woodaholic.

I've tried to get my wife to ride out to Hearne with me many times, it's a beautiful drive if nothing else. She has no interest. Of course, when I did get her to a classic car show once (my other source of depleting funds) she couldn't understand why people spent all that cash fixing old cars when new ones were for sale for so much less money.

Maybe it's a good thing she's never been to Hearnes.

I've tried to get my wife to ride out to Hearne with me .............................

My condolences to you for the non-support.

My wife is almost the direct opposite. Ten or twelve years ago, she went with me to a woodworking "show" -- lots of vendors hawking lots of stuff. Including some really great pieces of wood.

And while I was looking through the bargain bin, wanting to maybe score a few small pieces, she was off looking somewhere else. And when I finally caught up with her, she was haggling on a piece of burled/quilted koa, which is now our coffee table.

My experience is the same as Davids.

Diann goes to the shows, the lumber yards, Lee Valley etc.

I often wind up looking like Rod the wonder mule as I wander around in her wake wondering where all the boards I'm carrying came from.

On the plus side she lets me use her lathe:D.............Rod.

This weekend my wife said the Halloween candy is 3/4 gone. To make a joke I said no it looks more like 7/8. She did not get it and proceeded ask her what is larger 7/8 or 3/4. She said uhh...3/4. Sometimes I am glad she doesn't help with home improvements.

My step-daughter is learning fractions at the moment... I asked her how much 4/4 was, to which she gladly replied '8'. Because 4+4 was eight.

I guess they're still on the first day or two of fractions...

I'm with ya Larry. Curious though. What was the response?

You might help us...so we either make or don't make the same comment! LOL.
