UPS brought me a 68 lb box from Gilmer Wood! I got 68 sticks of African Blackwood and a 5lb big leaf Maple burl cap. They must have really sorted out the African Blackwood, because there wasn't hardly any sapwood or bad spots in these blanks. I about gave myself a ruptured disc just carrying the box into the house!

Either way I am now set for quite some time on African Blackwood. Why split a "bag" when you can have the whole thing... :)

That is a nice haul Scott. I was looking at some african blackwood to make threaded lidded boxes but is that stuff pricey.

Bernie, these sticks end up at $3.50 per (when you buy the whole bag). I didnt slap a ruler on them before coming in for the night but they look to be around 1 1/2 square but 7 to 12" long. For my finials, I have been using 3/4 x 3/4 pen blanks. So after I resaw some of these to pen blank size I will have the 7" long ones down to .88 cents each and the longer 12" blanks will yield 8 blanks. So those resawn blanks will be down to .44 cents! Pretty darn cheap, compared to what I was paying for African Blackwood pen blanks.

Juicy gloat indeed! Just remember us when you grow tired of that huge pile of finials and beg us to buy a few off... :)

Nice haul, Scott. I indulged in this deal as did several others on this forum, and I agree with the quality of the wood that was sent. Mine are mostly a hair under 1.5 inches, but they work great for finials and collars. I've never seen blackwood this cheap anywhere else! I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of that stash.

Wow Scott, I see a lot of ornaments and finials in your future. I look forward to seeing them and also what you come up with on the curl cap.

Ahhh, Gilmerwoods. I spend hours on their site just looking. I hope to get to stop there over Thanksgiving.

I just bought 10 pieces of 1"x 1" stock at $2. a piece from BigRob777 on the IAP forum. It is nice stuff also. That is another way to buy some good stuff and not have to fork over so much cash at one time. Go to that forum and search on blackwood

Nice!!, that's what I try and do, get them 1.5" square x 6" or 12" long and resaw them down for the pen blanks.

Nice gloat, Scott. As it happens, I am in Portland attending a conference and went by Gilmer Wood today. Very nice people and what a candy store! Paul, if you go over Thanksgiving, allow plenty of time and take your credit card :D:

Can't have to much wood in the stock pile...
Nice gloat Scott.

Did African Blackwood somehow get itself off the endangered species list?

Not that I know of. Just harder to find a cheap or cheaper place to aquire it! For me, this deal from Glimer Woods is the best deal going for this size. I will be resawing a majority of this, as needed, for finials and pendants. I sure wish I lived within driving distance to them, because the price I got was effected by 68 lbs of a shipping charge from UPS.
