I bought a used DJ20 that does not have a mag switch. Would appreciate recommendations on where to get one that does not require taking out a second mortgage.

Grizzly has several to choose from. But be forewarned you do get what you pay for. Four years ago I bought a mag switch from them only to have it break after the first year of service. I complained to Grizzly and they obliged by sending me a replacement at no additional charge. A little more than a year down the road same thing happens again, a little plastic part that relays the action on the on button to the contacts on the switch breaks. This time I used superglue to glue it back together and so far its held up for the last two years. If I had it to do over again i'd buy a name brand like Allen-Bradley, Square-D Siemans, etc.

Ted's right, you usually get what you pay for! An alternative to the Grizzly starters would be to check ebay for a used Square D 8536 size 0 mag starter. (seen below)

These can be had quite reasonably. You will, of course have to find one with it's enclosure and the momentary start/stop pushbuttons. One B12.8 overload heater will be needed for your 1.5hp motor wired for 230v. And make sure the magnetic coil is 120v/240v.

A 3-phase, 3-pole starter is fine for use with a single phase motor. Just use 2 of the 3 poles.

I found you a Furnas magnetic control on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Furnas-14CA32BA-Size-0-Motor-Starter-STR1279-/360282902433?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e288cfa1

This control looks close to the LVC control which was available for DJ20s. The Furnas would need a momentary start/stop pushbutton to work, plus one overload heater (probably H1036) for your motor's amperage on 230v. Although the Furnas starter is for 3-phase, it will work fine for a single-phase motor, using only 2 poles.

If you hold out long enough, the original Delta LVC control might be found for sale in SMC classifieds or on ebay. These are usually quite pricy. But, this Furnas control will serve you well.

If it's the safety factor you want then get a JDS Saf-start. Very simple, reliable and affordable. We used to put them on school equipment for that very reason long before the import switches were available. My local motor shop carries Sprecher Schuh contactors for a reasonable price and I replace all my defective and obsolete switches with them.
