How 'bout a little plywood storage for Christmas???? pics

Howdy everyone,

It seems that plywood scrap has overtaken my life. I had it suffed here and there and everywhere in 3 seperate buildings. Finding something was impossible!! I have been wanting to build something to organize this mess for a while now. In this month's Wood Mag there was an article about a plywood storage cart. I liked the design and adapted it to fit against the wall in my shop behind the drill press.

Here's where I started.

I used 3 sheets of 3/4" birch ply from HD and a couple pine 1X's to make the cabinet. I kept the basic dimensions etc.. of the one in the magazine but modifed it to be open on both ends and attached permanently to the wall. Leaving it open on both ends lets me store much more stuff. I have turning blanks etc... on the left side and plywood on the right.

I am so glad to have some place to store this stuff so I can actually tell what is in there. I had not built anything before becasue I couldn't come up with something that wasn't huge. This design doesn't take up any more space than the plywood itself leaned against the wall did and fit just about perfect in this spot between the overhead doors!! I still have 4' between the DP and the bench so there is plenty of room even for a fat guy. :p :D

That looks like an easy way to keep all the usable sized scraps neat and easily accessible. The "easily accessible" is the part I have trouble with.

Me TOO!!!!!! I also have a little trouble deciding what "useable" size is. I filled up the kindling barrel while I was sorting. Apparently "useable" is bigger now that it was when I first stashed some of these scraps. :D

Terry, the pieces you through away. you will tear up your shop looking for. After you have dismantled the shop you will realize that you burned them.
Always happens to me and everytime, too.

And before you ask where pics are of the stuff I have made ? Well part of it is burned and the rest of it....I don't know. Maybe sometime in the near future I will steal a camera, from kids, and post pics. BUT I will feel very inferior to what I have seen here. I am not into furniture right now, just nic-nacs and little stuff.

Hey Terry, that's slick! I'd consider something like that myself, but it would only have to be about 4 times as big! :eek: Hey, so I save a LOT of stuff! (More like make a LOT of mistakes!:rolleyes: ):cool:

Yes, the full sheets of ply have 1/2" edge banding top and bottom. This gives me 97" height for the full sheet storage. The remainder of the pieces are also edgebanded just for looks.

Thanks everyone. I was rather proud to figger' out putting the rack in this spot. It worked out great. Even impressed LOML and that ain't esy!!

I hear ya. I had WAY too many pieces and bits. I still have more in the storage building to sort through but I still have room in the cabinet so life is good!!

Looks good Terry! I really like the two open sides aspect of it. I think that I could even fit one like it in somewhere in my shop. However, I wish that I had seen the design before I put in the electrical receptacles every four feet.

I am happy to report that I figured out a spot to put such a sheet goods rack in my new shop.

I had planned to further enclose the duct collector (see the chalk marks in yellow on the floor). What I will also do is to build the sheet goods storage rack adjacent to the new wall (see the chalk marks in pink on the floor). The segment of white sheet goods is exactly 8 feet high and it is just about in the position where the outer portion of the storage rack will go. So, everything will fit.
