While I was photographing the cherry, I finally took some pics of this - now that's it's dry. I turned it green and bagged it. It ovaled, but no cracks. This is another piece from the failed crotch area, and instead of leaving the bark, I turned it thin and pulled off whatever wasn't stable. It left this uneven rim that I like. The whole thing sort has a peony flower vibe to my eye.
About 9 x 4 "
Just some BLO for a finish.

Now, this one has character!! Sean, I love the stuff going on with the oak, and you are right! Peony is dead on!

Gorgeous wood and I really like the form, especially the rim. Is that red oak?

Your bowl is stunning. It has alot of movement going on which makes it pleasing to look at , no matter which view you are looking at it from.

Love it -
How thin is it?

In the area of a quarter inch. It's not crazy super thin. It's still plenty strong. I just turned a little thinner than otherwise might have to lighten the weight of the oak and to hasten drying.

very nice.
I was wondering what a red oak bowl might look like. I have 3 or 4 trees down on my property from a storm a few years ago, now I may slice a piece or two and see what I can come up with.

;) Its really awful, that plain wood turned so thin just looks wrong, you should put someone else's name on it when you sign it...
MINE for instance!
Seriously, this has WOW factor on every level.

Sean,
This is a seriously nice bowl. Had the bowl been twice turned, I'm not sure I would have liked the uneven rim, but with the single turn green and warp, it could not have been a better choice IMO. Great job!

Very impressive bowl Sean! Love the feeling of motion the grain pattern gives off! I can see the Peony reference! Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
