It did used to be a good site, but I haven't bothered with it for a couple of years. Any one can post anything there, there are no moderators. Last time I checked, it was mostly spam commercials for knock off clothing.

What you need is a better Usenet provider (say like NOT Google)

You need one that honors the auto-SPAM cancels the Usenet Cabel (there is no Cabel) puts out.

I can tell you that Alternet and Astraweb both do not honor SPAM cancels.

That being said, the old work-horse of turning on the web sees little actuall use any more (it's clearly the oldest wood-turning forum)

I'm not recalling exactly when r.c.woodturning was created, but it was roughly 15 years ago, about the time I was running the Poll to decide if rec.woodworking would split (the Poll failed). I know I started out neutral on the issue, but ended up in favor. At the time, without SPAM, rec.woodworking would see 200 new posts on an average day, and up to 500 if a couple threads got to really hopping.

In a lot of ways I really miss when there was just one place on the 'Net to go to post about woodworking....:(

Sawmill Creek seems to be getting that job done pretty well in my opinion. :)

An internet forum needs a dedicated admin and constant attention to remain free of such trash. We have that here through the efforts of Keith Outten and the many moderators who's efforts keep SMC "clean".

I remember that, it was a good forum, the biggest drawback IMO was the inability to post pictures in the same forum.
Then the bean counters wanted to get rid of it as they could not get advertising dollars from it for the same reason, so it got dropped all around, too bad but life goes on.
