Cutting Paua Shell

Hello All,

Obviously where I live I cut an awful amount of this stuff, having some problems lately, the shell is spitting up some sort of sand like substance everywhere, brand new tube in, new lens and mirrors. the sand like grit even hits the laser's lid, lens just knackered due to this, any ideas welcome.
Air assist fine.

Damp newspaper over shell?

Thin acrylic or PETG sheet with hole in the middle attached to bottom of head?
