Garrett (http://www.metaldetector.cc/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=151) says their products are made in the USA.

I have a Garrett like the kind used at airports. I bought it used on ebay. It will detect 1 leg of a staple in the end of a board.

not sure why you dont want one from China?
im all for supporting made in USA but i got my metal detector wand
on ebay for under twenty bucks plus like another ten for shipping,
it only took a week to arrive from around the world and i have been
using it in my wood shop and it works fantastic!!

i check every single board i have before running it through my planner
or table saw and its some of the best insurance i have ever bought.

here is a link to one on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/GRIP-TOOLS-53452-Metal-Detector/dp/B000VWRTN8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1288024062&sr=8-2) and its a little different then mine but has same
features such as audible or silent (vibrate) alarms and this one comes
with earphones and a battery.

you cant go wrong for the price and mine works great!

Why not China? Would Taiwan be OK? Laos? Vietnam? Thailand?

How about Germany? Switzerland? England, Austria?

No harm in anticipating the next questions, though ;)

It seems to me if somebody was 'all for' buying American made products that individual would not be buying china made products.

At the first sign of political statements or personal attacks...as per the TOSs, this thread will be closed and removed from public viewing.

Just a little friendly reminder.

obviously someone didnt read the rest of my statement?
i would gladly buy American if the pricing were fairly close
but when i can save between $70-$125 on an item, it doesnt
take much figuring to know which way im going to go on buying.
sorry

Speaking seriously, I believe Leitz of Germany probably makes one. The Leitz distance finder device was praised by Gary Katz during his Finishing Carpentry seminar. He said it was the best.

For those of you unfamiliar with photography, Leitz manufactured most lenses for the famed Leica cameras. Leitz was considered the absolute finest in the world.

They probably have a website.
