Turkey calls

My grandson is starting to hunt. I would like to make him a turkey call. Where do you buy the slate and is there any secret in making one.

Brookside Game calls and Shell Creek both are who ive used. There is a ton of tutorials on the THO game call forums. I know i will help you all I can and pretty certain others here can help even more!

Ken, why do you use slate? I noticed at Brookside Game calls that they also have wood and acrylic sound boards.... Is slate better?......... Jerry (in Tucson)

Slate is the most forgiving. Ive found that a 3.5 inch slate with a 3inch cherry soundboard is about as basic turkey as they come.

Here, everyone seems to prefer aluminum or copper for the playing surface because we are so wet and damp. I use slate, aluminum and ceramic with mainly glass soundboard.
