The one think I'm going to change on the next watch I make is lopping off the top so the pin sits flush.

Alex, those are beautiful!! Where did you get the watch kits? And, did you use soft jaws to finish turn them both sides?

I agree it would look a lot better. Having said that they are both nice pieces. Well done.
What wood did you use?
Edit: Olive - paying to much attention to the pics

Alex,

Very nice watches and key rings. I especially like the idea of the key ring with the hidden compartment. The olive is spectacular, and from all that olive you cut you should have enough for hundreds of watches and key rings etc. I also would be interested in learning where you got the key ring kits.

Nicely done. I have a few key ring kits but have yet to make one. Yours turned out great.

The watches are also nice. Where did you get the kits?

Really nice looking watches and key rings. I just got done doing a bunch of pill holders and toothpick holders. I will post probably Monday or Tuesday when we get home again.

Here is where I got all my inserts.
The keychain kits can also be bought from pennstate or other places like craft industries.

Though, I was just looking at Klockit.com and it seems like they might have better prices. 40% lower and the inserts are 1/2" larger.

John, I didn't use soft jaws, instead I used a tight fitting wood chuck.
Basically I started by turning the front side of the watch and that included the hole for the insert. Then I parted it off the lathe and made a little wood chuck

This is one attached to the wood chuck. Since the fit was dependent on the little difference between each stock for two of the pieces I had to use double sided tape.

Hope this helps. I certainly suggest making any of these items but the pocket watches were particularly fun.
