Well this one was a good learning experience, I had a few troubles with it but I learned a lot about working with crack prone wood, And I managed to make something out of it. It's going out as a gift this week. it's about 8 1/2 diameter. finished with Danish oil, buffed with tripoli and ren wax.

Thank you everyone that helped me in the "apple cracks" thread!!!

Patrick, I would say you did well with that one!! Really a beautiful piece - one of the nicest chunks of wood I have seen.

Thanks for the great comments everybody, yeah not too bad for wood that I found on the curb less than a block away from my house. this bowl was a series of missteps and corrections. I did a lot of monkeying with it and there were several points where i thought it would end up as firewood so I'm glad i was able to save it. this is the nicest looking wood that I've been able to work with so far. I'm tempted to keep it which i think is the sign of a good gift.

A few things I learned on this one:
1) always look at the curb for interesting wood.
2) when you find the wood go back and get the rest of it (luckily I learned
this b4 it was all gone)
3) Thin CA is my friend
4) Anchorseal is tough to remove with sand paper :D
5) even quick trips inside and outside of the house can make a bowl crack
6)turn the rest before it all cracks

I turn a lot of Apple (comes from living in Washington State I guess). It can be a poorly behaved wood, but it can also be, well.... wonderful

I own the remants of a rather old Apple orchard. The trees were old when I bought the property 30 years ago, Rush Fairfield recalls the orchard when he and his wife were growing up here, well. many years ago.

Great color and grain in that wood. I'm glad that this one made it for you. I have not always been so lucky though I still love to turn it!

I think that's a great looking bowl. When the wood is that pretty, you can't beat a nice, clean form IMO.

David did you get a haircut?

yeah i'm hoping to get a few more bowls out of this stuff, hopefully I can even keep one. :)

seems to be a lot of apple wood threads lately. it's great wood, next one i'm going to try a slightly different drying method, I did have a few small cracks in this one but i was able to catch them before they got too big.
