Haven't posted anything new in a while. This was done for a niece & her husband from a limb of a oak tree from their front yard which came down in a storm last year. The limb was about 7" diameter, wing-to-wing is 8"1/2. Finished with AO. First time I have used AO, I can see why it is so popular - two coats and done.

Bruce, do you use any particular brand of antique oil?
Thanks,

Fred,

Minwax AO, not by deliberate choice, just what was available at a "going out of business sale".

Looks good, Bruce. It appears you had no problem with cracking. Was the wood green? Did you twice turn or turn to finish? I can get a lot of oak, but I've shyed away from it cause I hear cracking can be a problem.

Richard,

When I got the wood, it was already partially dry with significant end checking. Cut off most of the checking before turning, but still had to fill two cracks with epoxy+copper flake Inlace (see pic below). Turned the piece to final dimension in one go.

Nice NE bowl Bruce. I like the way it shows off the medullary rays. God job retaining the bark and filling the cracks.

Very nice Bruce. Where do you get the copper powder?

Ray - The material is called Metallic Dust Penny Copper - from Inlace. You can get it from several suppliers. I don't think it is actually copper filings, but the color is right.

Jim - Actually the choice of copper color was my wife's - she is good at that kind of stuff.

Steven - I didn't do anything special to keep the bark on. It was firmly stuck on which I got the piece. I just tried not to knock it off when cutting all that air.
