For my neighbor, from their giant tree that had to come down.
About 14.5" x 5".

The tanin was so strong from this one that it was making my eyes water at some points - even with my Trend on!

The bloodwood egg is for scale and about the size of a large chicken egg.

criticisms welcome.

Thanks!

I like this one Sean. Great rim treatment on this one, and from the side view you have posted, it looks like some really nice grain in this piece.. An inside shot of the bowl would be nice as well as a bottom view.

Nice work! Great photo by the way!

Sean, seems that red oak for turning gets a bad rap most of the time, but you sure are redeeming it!! Very nice bowl, beautiful form, and the wood is striking!

The bead treatment grabs my eye and then the wonderful character of the oak starts to be noticed. You've done a great job with your turning of a sometimes overlooked wood.

Sean, that is a very eye-catching bowl with the form and rim detail. I have turned a lot of red oak, but the results certainly do vary. Excellent piece...

Beautiful bowl. I agree with John that red oak takes a bad rap. I'm in the process of turning a bird house from some red oak and I happy with the results so far. Thanks for sharing this one and I'm sure your neighbor will love it.

That's a beauty ! In red oak....who da thunk it?

Gloat worthy !

Really good balance and edge treatment for the thickness of the bowl. The thickness looks right to me considering the material. Finish excellent too.

Great job !

Thanks very much to everyone for the kind responses and encouragement!

An inside shot of the bowl would be nice as well as a bottom view.

Inside pic attached. I didn't think to take one of the bottom, in part because I hadn't signed it yet.

Norm, it's finished with simple BLO and beeswax.

Thanks again, everyone!

The rim really draws my attention! The rolled oval shape works so well with the deep beads. It is quite pleasing, and aesthetic. Great shape on the rest of the bowl. Not always easy on oak.

Sean,

That is a super-nice bowl. A large, well turned, well designed and well executed work! I love the grain on this and appreciate you taking the time to get the inside shot as well!

One well worth showing!

Nice looking piece, is oak difficult to turn?

Sean Hughto

The knocks on red oak I've heard are that it is unsuitable for use in utility bowls as the grain structure will let liquids seep through. Another is that is is hard to turn when dry. And finally, it is often thought of as a having a plain looking grain with very open pores which some don't like.

I'll tell the recipient that this bowl is just for dry items. Oak isn't the nicest wood to turn, but I find it much easier to turn than say, dry hickory or pecan.

Very nice bowl and rim treatment but I think the lighting in your first picture impresses me as much as anything! Really brings out all the best qualities of your work. Just curious. Did you only use natural light? Time of day etc.? Your 2nd picture of the bowl doesn't come close to making the same impact. What was differerent? Thanks!:)

Thanks, Baxter.

Just day light. About 2 pm. THe main differnce is my angle in relation to the sun. In the first pic, the sun is coming from the right. In the second, in order to eliminate shadows, it is behind me. With the direct rays on the subject, it's much harder to avoid a too bright look.

Never knew red oak would be so pretty. Maybe it is do to the talent of the turner.
