I just finished five chess boards for Christmas gifts :) . When I was five years old my dad gave me a chess set. Now, nearly 30 years later, I am going to give him the chess pieces back in the chess case I made for him. Can't believe I still have the full set.

Greg those are really neat, never played chess myself but may start if I can get someone to teach me. Use to play a lot of checkers but my wife always beat me and I gave up :)

Tell me, did you make a set of chess men for the other boards? If so out of what? Are the boards of maple and maybe walnut?

The boards are walnut and maple with a gloss tung oil finish. I bought chess men for four of the five sets. They are really nice weighted wood pieces. I would like to make one set of chess men some day. But, it would have taken me about 10 years to make five sets for the Christmas boards.

Greg,

Those are simply exquisite!!! Well done. I'd be proud to play the Queen's Gambit on one of those

Greg,

I really like the chessboards. Can you tell us more about the design and construction?? Nice and clean design. I'd love to make one with my son...

It was from a 1992 issue of woodsmith. They still have kits. The kit has the magazine, real nice stop hinges and the latch for $16.95. They still have kits left from 1992.
