Hi everyone! I just finished a project and wanted to share. I haven’t built a nice piece of furniture since I was in shop class in junior high about 20 years ago but we just moved into a new house and I wanted to build some new furniture for it. I knew there would be a learning curve so I picked this one to be my first project since it was going to be an outdoor table and all the mistakes I would make would stay outside. It looks pretty good from about 5 feet away but when you look closer you start to see all the little flaws and blemishes. I keep telling myself those are the things that make it a one of a kind.

Its western red cedar and the contrasting wood is cypress. The cedar didn’t come out as red as I would have liked so I stained it with some cherry stain and then I finished the whole thing with Helmsman spar urethane indoor/outdoor finish. We tried it out for the first time at dinner tonight and everything worked pretty good. The table kept all the food from falling on the floor and the chairs held everyone up just fine. I recently found out we have another baby girl in the oven so I think my next project is going to be a crib. Hopefully I sharpened my skills enough on this one to make it turn out a little better.

That's a great looking set and I would be proud to have it on my patio. I like the combination of cypress and cedar. Fortunately, here in SW Florida, cypress is cheaper than poplar.

Love the contrasting wood that you used...didn't see the dimensions, did you use a plan or was this your own creation...Great Job!

That is a beautiful table. It's under a covered porch also which is nice. I only have one question. Why is that beer not open? I see the steaks are missing but the beer is closed. You may lose a few points for that.

I wish I could say it was my design but its based on a plan I saw in an outdoor furniture book at Garden Ridge. The diameter is 43".

How do you know that's not my second or third beer?

That looks great. If it was mine, I'd cringe every time it rained! :)

Trevor,

Fine looking table and chairs, nice choice in beverage too. Congrats on the project and the new addition to the family. You will need to make another chair now. If the crib turns out as nice as this, your new little girl will be proud to sleep in it.

You will need to make another chair now.

Nope, there's just the right number of chairs. There will be 4 of us: me, my wife, Bailey (pictured), and McKinzie (still in the oven).

That looks so much nicer than most of the commerial patio wear. Wish I would have built my own.

Nice work

Nothing like Shiner and steaks while sitting at something you created yourself. Great looking table and chairs!

Absolutly fantastic. I love it and so does my wife.
I have beem looking for a design to suite using up a bunch of reclaimed 4 foot long Douglass Fir. I won't come close to your workmanship but it could be fun learning. I'll have to search for the book. Any learnings you might want to share?

Nicely done! Very nice proportions and wood combination. Just looking at it you know that it is well built. Now, from the look on your daughter's face, I can tell that she is thinking that you should turn your attttention to her room and build her lots of neat furniture :)

If this were Facebook, I'd hit the "like" button. Well done Trever, fantastic project!! And congrats on expecting a new addition to your family; a crib would be a GREAT project. My first project was a crib for our first-born boy 7 years ago, and it has a slat design similar to this. If you are interested in pictures for ideas, send me a PM.

Benjimin,

I learned that if you use a router on a pivot to cut the circle for the table you have to take the width of the router bit into account. The ring on the table was supposed to be 4” wide, so I cut the outer circle, moved the pivot point in 4” and started cutting the inner circle. But I noticed that it didn’t look like it was coming out wide enough so I measured it and it was only 3 1/2". I was using a 1/2" straight bit and didn’t take the width of the bit into account. I should have moved the pivot point in 4 1/2". Luckily I had only made a couple of passes and the plan called for a rabbit on the bottom side of the table there anyway, so it all worked out.
