I'm ready to build the boxes for our new kitchen cabinets. I've seen many suggest using prefinished ply. The hardwood supplier in my area wants $75 per sheet. I can get unfinished for around $40. It's very difficult for me justify $35 a sheet extra when I need 20 to 30 sheets for the job.

(edit - this is for birch)

Is this price difference typical?

Thanks,

Mike

Wow, I paid $120 a sheet for pre-finished cherry!

The question you have to ask yourself is how much time will it save you.

Depends on the rest of your production methods.

For myself, unfinished ply is the easy answer--I spray face frames attached, and it's easier to spray the insides than mask off.

At one of my suppliers, 3/4" C-2 maple is $48 unfinished, and $58 prefinished.

Hi Mike,

I just finished my boxes. I used 3/4 maple pre-finished ply. I think I paid around $61 to 65 a sheet. For me it was well worth it. That saved a ton of work. I purchased 15 sheets of pre-finished, and maybe 5 or so sheets of unfinished. I did my kitchen and two bathrooms. I used the unfinished for the oven cabinet.

I just purchases some BB pre-finished, 5' X 5' sheets for $33 each. I used it for drawer boxes. The vendor was Lumber Products in Salt Lake City , Utah. MacBeath wanted $36 for the same BB ply unfinished. I just got lucky.

Should be only 5 to $10 difference. With plywood you need to make sure you are comparing similar grades or the pricing gets skewed real quick. c-2 or shop is perfect for cabinet interiors. And yes it does save a ton of time.

$75 for pre-finished is a steal!! The 1/2" cabinet grade veneer ply I buy for many projects runs me between $80 and $120 a sheet, depending on the species...and it's still "nude"...

I find pre-finished plywood great for cabinet interiors. Saves a ton of time. From my local ply guy, only about $5-10 dollars more per sheet. Well worth it for me.
