Preferring little sap wood I reduced the Mesquite blank down to a rough form. After drilling the opening I noticed three checks radiating down the sides while hollowing the form. I knew then I should stop wasting time and go to another project. Yes the side blew out, even after applying CA.

Piecing it back together and gluing the finial to the mangled lip resurrected the piece for the shop window.

Hutch, glad you weren't injuried by any shrapnel!! On the upside, would have otherwise been a nice piece. Good job on the finial, too.

Hutch looks pretty good for being pieced back together. Glad everything turned out and didn't get hurt by flying pieces.

Having a piece explode sure gets your attention in a hurry! I have a few pieces that I have saved just to keep as reminders of things not to do!

Sure is some pretty wood! Better luck with the next one!

Bummer, cuz that was/ is a nice piece. Although not a finial maker myself, I think that flow up to the top looks perfect. Glad you weren't wounded...as Steve mentioned, those IFO's are better than expresso for lighting up the CNS.

You definitely score some points for persistence. Better luck on the next one. It's too bad, as I think that one was going to be a nice piece.

That should look very nice in your shop window. I have 3 HF's on the window sill beside my lathe but none have finials!:)
