It is cool to have a piece of family history. S. Reesor was my great grandfather. He was known for his woodworking. It is 4.5" tall by 3" diameter.

I agree that is just to cool. You definitely should make one to go with it. That would be great to pass both on to family.

Doug, that is a wonderful heirloom!! I agree on turning a twin, and if you don't mind, I have saved this image for a future use!:) Great form on this piece, and what looks to be BE maple has developed a very mellow patina.

Thanks for the suggestion of making another one. I didn't think of that but it would be neat. I even know where I can get a piece of bird's eye maple.

Feel free to copy the design. I think the copyrite expired a few years ago.

How do you know what the original color was?

How do you know what the original color was?

One does not KNOW, but one can safely assume that if it's wood, it darkens with age... And the finish does too. Especially 150 years worth of aging. As well, you can see the bottom is not nearly so dark as the rest of the piece...
I think you can guess at the original color from that.

Doug I wish I had a piece turned by my grand father, the only one is the baby rattle he turned for my mother. It is an antique piece too but certainly not as nice as yours.
