Mail lady brings me this package today. I have paid for a #5 from Robin but he told me that it would be a while before he could get it feddled. I wasn't expecting it until after the first of the year. He told me this was an especially nice #5 even before his work and it certainly must have been. 100% Japaning and the totes are super. This one is virtually pristine. I had him put a LV A2 blade in it as well. I think this will end up being one of my favorites. I love the #4 I got from him and it is a fine plane but my fat fingers don't fit it too well. Much nicer fit on the #5.

Thanks for letting me show it off a bit. I am still smiling at the condition of this one!!

Thanks,

Terry

Wow! That's a fine #5. Bet it works better than your Record?

Herb,

Thanks and it sure does beat the Record. Older Stanley's and newer Record's don't compare....at least if I'm the one tuning the Record. I did give 'er a try this evening and it is SWEET!!!!! Unbelieveable how much difference the .125 A2 blades make in these old planes.

Oh, man...you guys are going to cost me. Between the great (and educational) demo in the Lie-Nielson booth at the show Sunday in NJ and all this "assimilation" of electron burners to "one human power" tools...sheesh!

BTW, very nice plane, Terry!

Gotta ask as I'll probably never get up the nerve to ask my wife:mad: for new "Hand tools".

Who does this beautiful work and how do I contact him. Does he give general prices based on pic of the plane or does he have to see it in person first?

j,

Thanks and yes it has cost a bit to get this far but....."They are an investment Honey"...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!! :D

Seriously, Even these super tuned planes with the A2 blades are around $100 including shipping. Cheryl is just glad I stopped wanting the tools that cost thousands and started working more in the hundreds. :D

Jim,

Robin Frierson is the guy. He is a member here but I have never seen him post. I met him on another network as they say. He is actually buying mint to near mint planes and then lapping the soles and generally super tuning them rather than full on resotration. I have 2 of his planes both with the super A2 blades. They are approx. $100 delivered but the prices do vary depending on the rarity and condition of the plane. He often has nice planes with stock blades for $50 to $75. I'm buying these to use so I really don't care about their rareness. Is that a word?? The one's I have are the less desireable (collector wise anyway) type 19's made between 1948 and 1961. As I say there are much more desireable types than these collector wise but I think these will serve me well most likely for the rest of my days.

Here is robin's email: frigator@adelphia.net

Terry, that's a sweet lookin' #5! If I didn't know better, I'd say it came off the assembly a week and a half ago! Nice score and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
