I found an Oak tree growing weird on my property but it was living and seemed healthy so I hadnt bothered with it. The main trunk came out of the ground and almost grew down hill before turning up. Well a hefty T-storm rolled it over a few weeks back and I decided to see what kind of wood was hiding in that weird growth part.

The pith was way to one side so I was able to get a hefty chunk of usuable wood in slab form and then some quater sawn pieces that i turned into call 3 x3 blanks. Everything was trimmed up on the BS and is now anchorsealed!

Nice looking color in that wood. I can't say that I envy you having to turn a bunch of oak, but I'm looking forward to seeing some finished pieces.

With an odd growing tree like that my guess is that those blanks will be lot of movement, really stressed and you can expect a lot of movement, control the drying and you should have some real interesting pieces.

Tomorrow they get a second coat of AS then when thats dry they will be stored in paper bags. I dont know much else to do, worst case is they en dup as firewood down the road:o

Ken, I was grubbing around a friends' brush/stump dump recently and there was an old pile of locust stumps. All rain washed, weathered and silvery, looking for a new home. So, I took my saw and 4 chains and tackled the critters. I got several blanks from the trunk butt atop the stumps, and several "wings" from the tentacles hanging off the stump. I used his wheel loader to shake the pile up some and it revealed many more of the same locust stumps. Now, I just have to wait a couple of years for the stumps to wash off and bleach. After getting home and sealing the butt blanks, I put my Oregon chain sharpener to work, making my saw chains good again. The attached pics show some the "wings" I saved, and also 2 bowls I spun outta the stuff. There is great grain in the stumpage. Your oak oughtta look dandy in time. By the way, I use Anchorseal also, and on some of the green red oak it has turned mildewy and moldy under the sealer.
The 2 walnut bowls are from some very old, very dry walnut I got as payment for some turning work, and there is more to come. Please excuse the picture quality.... I am no Ansel Adams

The big issue with these is the fact that the way the tree grew caused alot of abnormal cells and tons of stress and there will be quite a bit of throw away most likely...I think its known as reaction wood, caused by stress. I hope it all is usable, sure is pretty!

I have another tree thats way bent but in a big arc. Id love to let it grow as big as it could before a storm drops it but its coming down in a few weeks. I always envisioned it as a wrap around counter top waiting for me haha

Here is the tree that fell and i cut into the blanks. This is before it went down. You can see how it grew. The section I cut from was the first 8 feet of tree

Nature sure can provide us with some lovely, and funky looking stuff. I have a 14" red maple, that had fallen sideways to the ground years ago, and during the past years the new growth has been growing fully vertical out of the horizontal living trunk. I believe that this tree might provide a few fine 90 degree corners. I'll try to get a couple pics in a few days..... it's been pouring hre for days.

I scored some walnut this morning after a duck hunt. Some of it is trash but when you get stuff free you clean up the mess!

I believe that Ken has been sucked into the sister vortex... Wood hoarding!:D Welcome, Ken. You'll recognize a lot of the same faces from the turning vortex.:D

You definately have some reaction wood in those trees. If you tried to mill it into long boards, it would probably bend like crazy.

It does look like it will make some really nice bowl blanks.
