I made these 3 bowls for the lady who gave me the white birch from her yard. I made one for her already, and these are for her kids. She wants to give them to her kids as Christmas presents, and feels she needs to pay me for them, but I told her that she can still give them as presents without paying for them.

This one is 10.5" x 4"
163362 163363 163364

This one I turned very thin, with a slight ogee and is 7" x 2".
163368 163369 163370

The last one is 10.5" x 2.5".
163371 163372

All were sanded to 320, home brew oil, beall buffed, and ren wax.
As always, thanks for looking C&C welcome.

Steve,
I have a similar lady who provided me with a bounty of walnut last year and I too made her a nice bowl. I made her an additional one she wanted for her son...and I asked how he liked it, and she commented that he hadn't come to visit for her B-day, so she kept it herself. I laughed and she was a little ashamed I think, because I later got some elm from her and she said that he somehow 'made amends' and she gave him his bowl.

Nice looking birch and nice smooth forms, I've not turned it. Any comments on how well or difficult any of it was to work with?

Tim,

I love how birch turns! I turned wet and then the DNA method. No unusual amount of warp, dries in about the same time as maple, turns like butter with sharp tools, and taks a nice finish. Check past posts from Steve Schlumpf for the birch hollow forms - super nice.

Used to be a feller on Ebay that sold Alaskan birch. One of my favorite. Shines like marble.

Nice work on the bowls. The Birch has a nice warm appeal, no wonder she wants to give them as gifts and worthy enough to purchase. Well done.

Nice work, Steve, and a very nice gesture. I have turned birch one time (piece from Steve Schlumpf!), and it was a pleasure.

Nice work Steven, as for giving 3 bowls, if I do the work removing the tree I seldom give a bowl, and if I do it will be one bowl, never 3 .
But if you feel the wood is worth it, and or it makes you feel good, he who am I to try to stop you, :)

Niced job. The last one pictured is my favorite, with the sap wood really highlighed.

Beautiful stuff and a nice gesture on your part. I love to give away turnings especially in return for free wood.

Those are beauties. I really like turning birch. As Rich said it has a nice shiney look.

I think they are just great. Giving back 1-3-10 bowls is your choice. It's always good to share one's good fortune. Good for you.

The bowls look good. They should make wonderful gifts.

I was given a bunch of white birch for fire wood. It sure doesn't have that pretty grain. Fact I made the lady that gave it to me a pen using it and it was so plain I dyed the pen to make it pretty. Those are some real pretty bowls.

Very pretty bowls. White birch spalts pretty easily and if you have some extra you might give it a try on a couple of pieces.
