Critique Requested.

I turned this small 4 1/4" vase of rosewood this evening. Sanded to 150 and buffed wax finish. Part of the challenge was becoming comfortable using a newly acquired 5/8" skew.

Thanks for viewing and comments are appreciated.

Wow that is a beauty. Really well done. I haven't had a piece of redwood turn out yet.

Niece piece. I practice on pine 2x4 blanks with a skew.
That's a pretty amazing finish for 150. Keep em coming.

looks pretty good, i especially like the shape of the top, looks like you need to do a bit of sanding on the top though.

Really great form. Love the wood too. My only critique is that I can see sanding marks, or at least it looks like it has some marks below the opening. I'm hoping that 150 was a typo and you meant 1500....It would be criminal to only sand such a nice piece to 150. I never start sanding below 220, and would definitely sand a piece like that to at least 800 before buffing.

Hutch, I like the wood and overall form. Haven't done vases, so my comments wouldn't mean much. My guess is some will say the foot should be smaller, though I kind of like it!

Agreed on the sanding.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know how I missed the sanding marks:eek: This will go back to clean up the mess.

I love it... Wouldn't change a thing. Great job on the finish redo. I would have to sand much higher than 150 to get a shine like that. What a great little vase!

Good form. I think the foot is about right as it looks stable yet proportional to the rest of the piece. I have never turned rosewood before, so I do not know its characteristics, but I agree about the sanding. Probably taken through the grits up to 400 would have given a mostly flawless finish.

Around the neck, it seems that there is tear out, just a little. This could be due to the wood itself, [like black walnut does at times] or needing sharper tools with lighter cuts to eliminate tools marks, tear out. etc.

Nice curves, and good form overall [my opinion]

William I'm sure glad you are going back to clean up the sand marks at the neck. This is too pretty a piece to let some sand marks detract from it. Looking forward to the re-post...Bill...
