I have a couple of SN2 chucks that came with 50mm jaws. These jaws go from approximately 42mm to 65mm. I then got the 35mm jaws that are suppose to fill the gap between the 25mm and the 50mm. These jaws go from 10mm to 32mm so I still have a 10mm gap. Guess what range a lot of my smaller turnings fall into:mad: Am I missing something here:confused: What do I need to get (it's only money) to fill the gap between 32mm and 42mm? Thanks in advance for your counsel--think I'll go have a beer.;)

I not a pro, and I may be missing your point. Why don't you just turn the piece so it will fit a jaw set rather than turning the tenon, then trying to find a jaw set that fits? The best "tool" I made is an "H" shaped go-no go template. One side fits the biggest tenon and the other side fits the smallest tenon the chuck can hold. As long as your tenon is between the 2, you chuck will be able to grab it.

Yeah, I have a go-no go but in my current case for example, I am trying to make some ornaments that force me to have a particular sized tenon with very little tolerance for size due to drill bit sizes etc. I was hoping to find a jaw solution without having to redesign the whole thing.

I think it may have to do with terminology.
Per the below specs, I think you need the 35mm Spigot Jaws, not the 35mm Bowl Jaws.

Size Jaws / Expanding / Spigot
35mm Bowl / 38-59 / 10-31
35mm Spigot / 52-72 / 31-50
50mm Bowl / 51-72 / 42-64
This is from the Teknatool site.
Hopefully you can exchange the jaw sets.

You do need the 35 mm spigot jaws. I went through this same thing a few months ago. I had not used the 35 mm jaws yet, so I exchanged them.

Ah, I apologize.....

Kyle....no need to apologize. I was probably not clear in my original post. Hang Loose!

Bob,
There was an interesting thread on this subject, but I can't find it right now. I think it was posted by Stu in Tokyo. It involved turning a piece of nylon cutting board to fit your 50mm chuck with a hole cut to size and dovetailed to fit your needs. A slot is cut through the turned ring to allow compression from the jaws. I made a couple from Delrin for the same reason you have. Works great for those times when you need a tennon at an "in between size". Saves having to buy new jaws.

Since Richard brought up other jaws….just a possibility…

Woodcraft has the Nova soft jaws on sale for $9.99
I have a set I have not used; in the closed position the inside is 15mm and the outside is 120mm. There appears to be a 21mm movement in almost all of their jaws so the maximum inside opening (for a tenon/spigot) would be about 36mm.
I don’t know if this is large enough for your project and there is very little that could be trimmed from the inside without getting into the screw holes.

I did a little more research and the jaws are 1" thick. Measuring mine, in the fully closed position, the outside edges of the inner screw holes is 40mm. Since the jaws are an inch thick you can enlarge the opening as long as you do not go deep enough to hit the screw heads (about 3/4 inch) I would think this is deep enough to hold anything you want unless it is really long.

I took some quick pics of what I'm talking about. Sorry about the poor quality, I tried using auto contrast in Picasa. The thread I mentioned showed a good how-to, but this might show the general idea. You can use a cheap cutting board for material, I had some delrin, or UHMV...whatever. The one shown here will allow me to chuck a 1-1/4" tenon with the 50mm jaws. Still looking for the original thread showing this. Hope this helps.

That looks like it might be the ticket. Thanks
