Here's a piece from 'liquid amber'(I think that's what they call gum trees in California). I got this piece of wood from Bert Solis a while back along with some other really fun goodies. This is sort of a new form for me... I'm not sure I like it, but I sure had fun turning it. I think it's about 6 inches wide. Finished with BLO and wipe-on poly. Comments and criticism always appreciated.

David:

Nice work, I also have some liquid amber from Bert but haven't tried turning it yet.

I like that shape, and love that wood. the finish looks super, as expected, and I think a nice little piece for a desk or an end table or ????

I like it. Seems like some fresh cut flowers ought to be coming out of it.

Nice work. Sweet Gum's latin name is Liquidambar styraciflua. Most of the pieces that I've turned have had a fairly greenish tint. The spalting here is nice.

David, this form is very pleasing! Not one I have seen before, but it is proportioned well, the lines are great, and just a really nice piece. Love the wood, too, but the form shines on this one IMO.

David, Great shape the proportions are just right to the eye. The wood has a lot of wonderful things going on in it and that adds to the old world feel to it.

Another fine specimen,

Jeff

You sure keep busy. Another nice one. It think it may be exaggerated by the flattening that happens with photos, but it looks a bit squat somehow in the straight on view. It kind of imparts a personality though, which is cool. Overall, I'd be happy to have it on my shelf.
