Hi -

I bought a Grizzly G0462 lathe (no laughing, please; it was affordable) about a year ago. Today I received via USPS my after-market (Best Tools) slick bowl turning tool rests and a post. The post is very short, too short to use in the banjo that was supplied with the lathe.

Anyone know if a banjo from a Grizzly G0632 will fit my lathe? They're both 16-inch swing lathes. Would I be able to adapt the 632 banjo to fit my 462? Seems to me I should be able to scavenge parts from both to make a banjo that works and is higher than what is supplied with the 462.

Thanks! (And, yes, I wish I had a Powermatic, but budgets being what they are, the Grizzly works for me (and my wallet)).

Jon, can't you just return the short post and get a longer one? Be easier than modifying the banjo. I have the 0632, and would not advise getting that banjo. I like my lathe and the banjo marginally works, but the hole is a bit smaller than 1" and will not accept some posts without reaming it out. Also the threaded ratchet lock for the post is really cheap (broke soon after I got it) and the threads also soon stripped out on one of the lock positions. The cam lock for the banjo body does work well, though. And in general the Grizzly stuff in our shop has been a great value and we're happy with all of it.

If you go the banjo route, get a better aftermarket one. Just measure the gap between the bed ways.

Thanks, Mark.
I didn't realize there were after-market banjos available. Got any leads?

John, I think Mark was saying to return the post and exchange it for one with a longer post. The Robust rests come with a variety of post lengths for example.

Another Option is this:

Tool Rest Dog Leg

Offsets the toolrest to get into those hard-to-reach spots. Typically used with our Low-Profile style toolrests, not included.

I picked one of these up at the AAW Symposium this year. I bought a manufacturer's 2nd for half price. You might call and see if they have any left. This should also give you better access when turning large platters and bowls.
