Today was wood day!! Not only did I receive the shipment of burls from Mike Smith, but I purchased this load of curly maple. I have a friend that will share some of it with me, and I will keep several of the blanks. Some I may sell.

The large board is 8/4 x 11" x 12' long! Tight curl end to end.

The other two boards are 12/4. On is 6.5" and the other 7.5" - 10' long, and both curl end to end.

Wiped a little brown leather dye on it to pop the grain.:D

There was more than this available, but Ms. Keeton wouldn't let me get a mortgage on the house for the rest of it!;)

This stuff will make some VERY nice dyed pieces!

Good grief man, get a grip on yourself before it is too late!:eek::eek::D

The Curl Fairy - is that the Burl Fairy's cousin? :D:D:D:D

I got to thinking about how many different colors I can dye this stuff - I think it is endless!!

My apologies in advance to all those that shudder when a piece of wood gets adulterated with color!!:o;)

There were probably 6-8 more 12/4 boards, and a couple dozen 8/4 and 10/4 boards - all of similar quality. I really had a hard time coming home with only three!!!

John that is some gorgeous wood. Knowing you they will make some beautiful turnings. I hope you leave a couple plain to show the natural curl.

How's the hunting going John? I know you have several stands that I saw down there. Bow or gun?

I think Steve Schlumpf is rubbing off on you with all this dye and curly maple thing!

Roger, that's it!! It is Steve's fault!! Now I can tell Ms. Keeton the real source of my problem!:D

Bernie, I hunt with a bow almost exclusively. Went out this evening, but didn't see anything - except the doe in the backyard as I was leaving the house!!;) But, I am horn hunting, so she is safe - for now!

Wow John, I'd say you had a very good day. This maple should keep you busy for a while! I think I might buy stock in a dye company:cool:.

Great looking wood. Cut locally?

Beautiful stuff... I wish I could source something like that within driving distance of here. Based on your recent attraction to smaller forms, I see a bunch of forms in those three boards.

Baxter, this wood came from a fairly large lumber mill about an hour from me. They kiln dry and mill local hardwoods - mostly oak and poplar, but a scattering of other stuff as well - walnut, cherry, etc.

The guy showed me a bunch of Ambrosia maple - all cut 4/4!!!:eek: What a disgrace!

David, the two smaller boards are perfect in size for the type of things I enjoy doing. A friend and member of our turning club is coming over tonite to see what portion he wants. I think he is interested more in the wider board, though I want to keep some of it. I think it would make some beautiful platters - maybe embellished with some carving or pyro.

Now that's my idea of porn. We woodworkers must be a sick bunch of folks.
Can't wait to see what comes out of these boards.
Where is Mike Smith located??

Where is Mike Smith located??Mike, these boards were purchased locally, but the burls did come from Mike Smith. He can be contacted here (http://www.easternncwoodworkers.com/msmith/profile.htm). I would add that Mike is providing a very nice prize package for the Fall Turning Contest here on SMC, and he informs me that he has some very nice Ambrosia maple he is saving for that.

Um, John, did you have to bleed on it, like marking it as your board? Please don't post any pics using yellow stain to show the grain...

Can't be too thin, too rich or have too much wood inventory!! I am sure what was once square will be round in short order. I can't wait to see the colorful stuff you will come up with. Curly just looks so good when dyed. Good score Mr. K!
