View Full Version : Look what the stork brought!

OK, so it wasn't a stork, but a guy in a brown truck. Actually, two guys. One in a brown truck and another in a white one. But, at least, ONE of the items is my new "baby"! :D I'm now the proud papa of a not-so-bouncy LN 4-1/2 smoother! :D Figured as long as I was adopting, I may as well pick up one of his nephews, too, that being, a LN Butt Mortise Plane. :D Lots and lots of thought went into the purchase of either, but my buddy in CA, Gene Collison was most kind in trading information back and forth about both of these pieces. With LOML having an order in for all new custom made interior doors for the "money pit", that will come in real handy. The 4.5 speaks for itself! Wow...What a piece! No tweaking and straight out of the box, I was taking whisper-thin shavings off a hunk of Cherry I tried it on! A whole fistful of shavings from behind the cutter literally just floated to the floor! :D Heck, I haven't even adjusted to frog on the thing, nor touched the blade! Very impressed, to say the least. Then, already knowing what my own "learning curve" (read that as: VERY steep! :o ) is like, I opted for the Veritas DT guide and saw. There are rare earth mags embedded in the guide to help a klutz, such as myself hopefully keep things running true. Working on my bench currently, so haven't had a chance to take that for a spin yet, but it will come. Christmas break is coming and it'll be a nice break from the bench job, as well as co-piloting the "entertainment committee" for guests. Oh yeah, got the little spokeshaves from LV, while I was at it. Need to wait until my hands don't hurt quite so much to use those little guys! :( All in all, quite pleased with the recent acquisitions! :) Thanks for taking a peek and wish me luck in learning how to properly use all these cordless wonders!

Hey, I thought that was my idea! SWEET! Which frog did you get?

You've amassed a wonderful collection in very short order.

Well deserved.

Thanks, John! After talking to Lee at The Best Things, I decided I would go with the standard frog, for now. If I feel a real need for the York, I can always get that later. Besides, I have intentions on the LV LA Smoother and/or Jack when they come back into stock and plan on the HA blade for it. :D For now, I think I'm set pretty well. Like I said, though, it's a matter of learning how to use them all properly, as well as the proper care and feeding! :)

Mark, Tom...Alliant Energy has their money, but at the price of these puppies, one could keep the place lit up for quite a while!

Steve, you bring up a good point. Maybe I'll have to check with Lee, because I think they forgot to pack the cords with them! Hmmmm...Hope I didn't get took!

John,

I was looking at the butt mortiser. Let me know how you like it. it's a toss up between that and the LN #7 next. I have a need for both but I dunno how much I'll use the mortiser.

Hey Keith,

No doubt, the butt mortiser is definitely more of a "specialty" tool. The instructions show you being able to do a mortise with just two adjustments of the blade depth, though I believe that's more for "modern" doors with a Fir carcass. I was doing it on a piece of Hard Maple. Needed to take much smaller bites, but in the end, a perfectly flat bottom and right to the scribe lines! The blade is only 3/4", so one can effectively use it for striker plates and such, as well. If you do or plan on doing a fair amount of hinge work, I think it's money well spent. And, a lot less mess than setting up a router and jig! :D I've done them with a chisel before, as well, but can never seem to do a nice enough job on getting the bottom perfectly smooth or even depth. This takes care of those issues and, for 'ol 10-thumbs here, it's a great little piece! :)

Good lord, man, you need help! Find a 12-step program for hand tool addicts and get to a meeting fast, before you put your family in the poorhouse. (He says, wiping the drool from his chin!)

Yeah Gary, they say there are all kinds of bugs going around. I must've caught one of them. I attribute it to not getting a flu shot this year. :D

Hmmmm...Well, let's see; So far, six nice planes (includes the scraper plane), a decent set of chisels and a DT setup. According to the 12-step program, I only have four more main items to go! :D Better make good selections, heh?! :D

Oh NO_O_O_O_O! Gene, I always get in trouble when you start thinking! :D BTW, did a quick check on the MKII and I see what you mean by "tweaking" the tool rest bar a bit when going for the micro bevel. I'll have to give it a shot! Keep thinking there, my fine machinist friend! :) BUT, you're STILL dangerous! :D

John,

Well my friend those are some kinda PURDY!!!!! I would imagine between the both of us we have spend enough to send a kid for a year of college. :D I haven't bought the number or variety of new planes that you have but I do have quite the Stanley c*llecti*n either in hand or on the way...more on the way than in hand.

I actually have in my hot little hands the SWEET #4 type 19 with LN A2 blade from Robin, the also SWEET LV LA block and my old Record #5. I have the LV LA jack (got the HA blade already but no plane to put it in yet), Stanley #6 type 19 new in the box and a really nice Stanley #3 type 19 from Ebay, #5 type 19 Stanley from Robin with the A2 blade and hopefully another #4 type 19 from another plane dude on WoodNet which I plan to put the LV scraper insert in. Sooooo...hmmmm....that makes 3 here and 5 more on the way so I guess I'm down to 4 on the 12 step trip to brokeness. :D

This is fun....expensive......but fun!!! I'm really having a great time using the ones I have. I've been planing everything in site with the #4. Unbelieveable how much difference the LN A2 blade makes in one of these planes!! I'm still having a bit of tearout on the QS white oak but it is much less than my power planer left and I'm still trying to learn the technique of course. I'm getting shavings that are less than 1/2 of 1 thousandth (is that .0005???) from Robin's #4. Kinda slow going but it is working and sure looks nice!!!

JOhn,
Nice score. Not to hi-jack your thread, but as I was reading your purpose for buying a butt hinge mortising plane, I was wondering if anyone used a Stanley No. 71 Router plane for establishing the bottom of a hinge mortise. I have a couple of them, but never thought of them for this purpose.

to clean out the bottoms of the hinge mortises. I establish the edges of the motise about a 16th smaller than the hinge then clean the waste out. Usually adjust the depth once or twice depending on the size of the hinge. Then I go back and clean the edges up. The only problem is, if you dont go deep enough on your cuts for the sides, then you risk lifting material outside of your hinge area. It actually works very well. For hinges smaller than 1 1/2" I just use a few chisels.

First Tyler and now John........there must have been some bug going around.....Tyler caught it and passed it on to John.........spending huge amount of $$$$ on non-power tools and then spending huge numbers of hours MANUALLY working (powering) them..........This is an alert!!!!! There is definitely some kind of a bug going around in the northern areas of the mid-West!...... ;) :D

Congrats John!........

Hey Terry, are you refurbing any of those yourself? For me, I think I'm going to try and get a good feel for how a nice one is supposed to work and then might try my hand at it. Why not, heh? :D And man, you ain't lyin' about it being expen$ive! Whew! There goes the Jamaica cruise! Oh wait...Wasn't saving for that, anyway! No harm then! :D

John,

I've only bought one's already refurbed or one's that hopefully need very little to be near mint. I think I can tune them myself but I'm realy not ready to start trying to refurb one from the ground up. Having Robin's #4 for reference and using it vs. my ole Record really opened my eyes to how one really should be to be right. For now anyway I'm sticking to buying one's like this........

<IMG SRC="http://www.terryhatfield.com/33.JPG">

I picked this really nice looking #3 up on the bay for $55 total.
