This piece presented some problems. Spent way to much time fixing it. The knot and cracks were fixed with CA and sanding dust. The cracks around the knot ended up being pretty wide and went all the way through the bottom. But it worked out ok. Will try this with a better piece of wood. But I do like to incorporate knots and inclusions in stuff that is not for every day use.

The carved lines defining the curved rim sections are an eye catcher and very appealing. Outstanding work.

Mark, that is a very nice looking piece of walnut, and the knot does add character.

But, this is such a neat form, and you have done such a great job on it. The carving adds a lot of interest - but, I think it would do so much better with clear wood.

As always, your photo composite is just beautiful - great work on both the turning and the presentation.

Very pretty Mark. You lost me on this one. I could visualize myself trying the other two you just posted. The carving on this one looks too perfect!:) Do you just do this freehand or do you use the indexing mechanism on the lathe and have some kind of jig set up?

Nicely done. I like the knot, but I'll bet it made the carving a little more difficult. Great color.

What, you didn't continue the carving to the inside of the bowl? Amateur...;)

Really cool bowl. I like the carving. It adds another dimension. Being made of my favorite wood helps.

Thanks to all for your C&C. Apologize for the recent flurry of posts, but I seem accumulate some pieces and then set up the photo tent. I like the way the form on this one worked out and will do it again with some refinement. The inspiration for the piece was not all that organic, believe it or not I was inspired by the fender curves of the 427 Shelby Cobra. (The neighbor with the vegetables just happens to have one in his garage.)

Do you just do this freehand or do you use the indexing mechanism on the lathe and have some kind of jig set up?

Baxter, On this piece I just used the indexing on the lathe to draw some straight lines. I didn't use any jigs. I leave it in the chuck and do some of the carving, filing and sanding on the lathe.

What, you didn't continue the carving to the inside of the bowl? Amateur...;)

Mike, Amateur would be a promotion. Now as for the inside, that is an idea.

Cathy & Scott, I first did these types of relief carvings on boxes back in HS shop. Several methods to go about it. I use chisels, an automated chisel, rifler files and lots of hand sanding. The top curves were cut with a small back saw and dremel, then refined with files and sandpaper. For a good tutorial on this type of relief work check out John Jordan's website.

Thanks again.

These carved form are really interesting. I've been looking at a lot of this kind of work and thinking about trying something similar. Your stuff seems very nicely understated whereas a lot of the carved form I have seen are a bit "over the top". I like the simplicity.

My all time No. 1 favorite car. A few years ago I almost bit the bullet on a Superformance replica.
