Thanks for reading! :)

So, I bought a can of Behr's Classic Oil Stain in Dark Walnut a while ago for a rifle stock refinishing project I was working on. I really liked the results, so I decided to use the same stain on a workbench project. I didn't have enough stain left in the can to do the whole bench, so I figured I'd just go to Home Depot and pick up another can, and combine both cans to make sure the stains "matched."

Lo and behold, I could find none of this stain at my normal HD, nor any HDs in the surrounding area. I looked on Behr's website, and this stain isn't listed among their products. Deductive reasoning tells me that Behr no longer makes this product.

Do any of you know what happened here? And if Behr did quit making this product, what would you recommend to be used in its place?

The code above "Dark Walnut" is B-145. Here's a pic of the can:

Yes. Behr is getting out of that market. I hate what HD has done:

Three years ago, they carried Zinsser, Minwax, Deft, and Varathane products. Then they got rid of everything but Minwax, and added a complete line of Behr products, which looked strangely similar to the Minwax offerings. Then a year later, they got rid of all Behr stuff, and now have only Minwax - at least at the HD's around my area.

On the plus side, a lot of Behr/Deft/Varathane products are on clearance in the HD's if you can find them.

Dagnabbit! I was afraid you'd say that, Prashun, as I've definitely noticed that HD has become the place to go for anyone looking for Minwax, and Minwax only. Unfortunate to say the least. All of my local HDs are sold out of those non-Minwax products, so I guess it's time to find a suitable alternative.

At least we still have Google...

You're alternative is the better choice, a real paint store with pros that can really help you and superior products. HD is a convenience center that may not carry the best products. I have never been a fan of the Behr line.

I've got trips to Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore lined up this weekend. I'm also going to check out what Lowe's has to offer - I see they carry Cabot oil-based stains, including one in Dark Walnut. What's the consensus on Cabot stains?

Our local HD is now restocking Zinssers and Deft brushing lacquer. A local Ace Hardware carries Deft but only in the gloss. I am finishing a project and wanted to use Satin....Ace didn't have it....HD did.....

It appears to vary by store.

Mason, I don't have any experience with Cabot stains. Are they a Lowe's brand? I like what pros use, mostly. I think you should always buy the best a manufacturer has to offer. Too many inferior products on the market to waste good time and effort. I once ran out of Bin primer on New Years day. HD was open and I bought Beher's best primer. Fifty gallons wouldn't have covered better than the one coat of Bin. Never again.

I've used Cabot stain and top coats before. They're fine.

Personally, I've never had a 'bad' experience with any brand of oil-based stain.

I use the red mahogany. Haven't been able to find it for years.
