African Blackwood is my friend and I cant believe I have waited this long to try some. Suffice to say, I will be ordering a whole lot more.

Here is the latest batch of small ornaments. The dark pendants are the African Blackwood and the others are various African wood pen blanks I had (and used while waiting for the Blackwood). Some Padauk and the white one is American Holly (which makes a very dramatic color contrast, IMO) Bulbs range from bur oak to cocobolo. The whole batch is around 4 1/2" tall and about 1 3/4" dia at the bulbs. The "hangers" are just bent brass wire. The last picts are for a size reference to the tips of the pendants.

Thanks for looking and commenting!

Scott, you are on a roll!! Really some beautiful work, and yes, the Blackwood is sweet for detail work.

Excellent!

Great looking ornaments Scott! I really like the Holly one! No blackwood but I do have holly. Will have to give that a shot!

Those really look great to me. I have got to give a try on ornaments. Looks like great practice on getting proportions right. Nice turning.

Nicely done, Scott. I like the 'full figured' bulbs on the finials. You're sure gonna have a nice looking tree this year.

On ornaments this small are you hollowing them at all?

Scott Hackler

No hollowing, other than a 1/2" hole bored straight through. The height of the bulbs (on the flat ones) is around an inch and I dont see much point in the hollowing. I have started hollowing any of the ornament bulbs that are round, as there is a noticable weight reduction. Thanks.

Scott - very nice work! I like the variety of woods used but really like your icicles! Nice design and detail work on each of them!

Keep up the good work!

Oh and I forgot to meantion that they are in chronological order from left to right, starting at the top picture. It is nice, for me, to stare at the progression to see how I have improved on the pendants. I still have 3 American Holly blanks (the white one) and I am going to try it again to see if I can go thinner. It was nice and hard to work, but I am spoiled with the African Blackwood and cant seem to get the other woods as thin as I would like.

Beautiful collection of ornaments Steve. Wow, now that is thin (pic 4 & 5)! Sometimes it's hard to judge size in some pics but, with your thumb and fingers for reference I realize, that is thin! Great work.

Those are very nice Scott. they are all nice but the shape of the last (single) one is my favorite one, it just appeals to me very much, thanks for showing :-)))

Great looking series. I'd for one would like to see a process tutorial of your icicle turnings. Very nice work.

Nicely done...I guess I need to just start doing some more ornaments to give me better practice on finials for HFs.
You've definitely got it down pat.

Thanks for sharing.
