I posted this on the Dark Side but I figgered what the heck, I'll post it on the Electron Burners forum too. I've been totally eaten up by hand planes lately. I HAD to get something done to store them...so.........

Howdy everyone,

I actually got done with work late this morning (yipeeeee) and I headed out to the shop to work on the plane storage problem...got planes...got more on the way...got no storage. I'm so excited to actually be able to work in the shop that I had to share. :D

I decided that I would clean out the bottom drawer in my bench and rearrange the right hand side of the bench for that stuff. That would leave a nice big drawer that would hold lots-a-planes etc...

I decided to make pull out shelves. I slapped together some boxes out of scrap 1/2" baltic birch and used some 100 lb full ext. slides that I got at an estate auction. Cost..close to zip. That is a good thing considering how much I've spent on planes.

The bottom drawer is actually 32" long and 14" wide. The longest slides I have are 24" so it doesn't pull all the way out but I have access from the other side for the stuff on that end. Mostly Kreg stuff, brad nailers etc...

Here's the lower pulled out.....

I decided to use some 16" slides and make two 16" X 14" trays for the upper level pull outs. The one over the lower drawer has jig parts and measuring equip. etc...

The opposite side ....

And is the cool one. Sharpening drawer!!! Float glass, LV angle guide goodies and lots of sandpaper.

As for the plane drawer itself, I got the angled insert cut from some left over 3/4" white oak ply and it's just sitting in there with the 3 planes I do have and some other neander type stuff on it. I will wait for the rest of the planes to arrive before dividing the drawer up so each item will have it's own home. All this stuff will be very easily accessed in the bench. Saving a few steps vs storing it else where in the shop.

I had almost forgot how much fun it was to be in the shop doing something without 3 phones ringing!!!! Work has been so stinkin' crazy that I have had zero shop time lately. I'm glad to get some today and put it to productive use.

Thanks for looking!!!

Terry

Terry,

Now I'm going to have to find dock space for the fleet that has been assembling at my place. Nice job.

You're scary Mr. Hatfield. If I could get my office at work half as organized as your shop...

You are my ideal...Well done.

His shop has to be the cleanest one I've ever seen...even with a bunch of BBQ fanatics milling about (pun?)...it's also one of the nicest shops I've seen in person.

Good job Terry...looks great!!
