This is similar to one I posted earlier. but this one has a threaded lid. About 8" tall and 2-1/2 in diameter, one soaking in Danish Oil then buffed. Comments and critique welcomed.

Richard,

That's a very nice box. Walnut is supposed to be difficult to thread. Would you mind telling us more about your method? It looks like you got some very cleanly cut threads.

Very pretty box Richard! I roughed out a couple pieces for one last winter. I should try roughing out another. Thanks for reminding me!:)

Thanks David. The threads were cut using a jig I made. An old thread showed it, but here's a couple pics;

I love walnut anything, but this really is a special box. I've never seen one on a pedastel before, and I love how you matched up the threads / grain. I know there's a method to that madness.
Thanks for putting it up online.

This is just a special turning all around. Beautiful walnut, the pedestal is quite nice, and it makes for an unusual and elegant form. Of course, adding the threaded lid, just sets it apart from usual fare.

Really lovely piece, and one that may be stored in my memory banks and hopefully brought out at a later date [something similar, but not exact]

Well done!

That is a beautiful box. I love the shape of it. Looking at your threading jig, I guess I won't be doing threaded boxes in the near future. Looks like a little more than I want to bite into.

Richard, you do such nice work on these! And, the thread chasing is really clean, too.

I thank all of you for the comments. Paul, the threading jig is really not complicated, in fact it's really simple. Dick Mahaney here on SMC was the first I saw with the idea and I just copied his with his permission...and help. I used a cross slide vice as Dick did, but some are made to fit in the banjo. I like the vice because of the two quick adjustments that can be made. The handle on the right of the vice advances the piece left and right as needed, and the handle in front moves the piece forward and back. These two adjustments make the set-up quicker for depth. Once set-up is done it's just a matter of slowly turning the chucked piece to be threaded into the cutter. I'm kind of a tight wad I guess, because if I can make a tool for $100.00 or less instead of spending $350.00 - $800.00 and still get good results, then that's what I'm going to try.

Well, tightwad, I'm just like you. :D Great job on the threader, and great turning, too!!
That's one of the few things on my 'to do' list.
Thanks for the pics! :)

Very different design for a box! I like it! Was pleasantly surprised to see that you threaded the lid! That's cool!

Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!
