I am designing a 60" round pedestal base dinning table and have more questions than answers. I would like to have at least one 12" leaf, two if feasible.

Is there a standard ratio of table top to pedestal base diameter. What is the effect of adding a 12" extension? two extensions?

Thanks, Gene

A fairly common solution is to put a vertical parting plane in the pedestal. When you pull the top apart to insert leaves, the pedestal pulls apart too.

Thanks, I have a couple of designe for the pedestal, one of which might be modified to be split. I also hahr e trestle and through mortise design that I like and will take a look at mods to that one.

If you are considering only two 12" leaves, it is possible to keep the pedestal solid. Making a pedestal that splits apart is tricky business and only necessary if you are planing to use many leaves. Keep it simple.
