Ok...Since Mark has been showing off his Natural Block Bowl Turnings, I decided I wanted to try one for m'self. This piece was just a scrap of firewood that was a remnant left over from a bunch of cherry that I cut up for turning blanks. It looked like it might have a little figure and it looked really rough, so I reckoned that it was a good candidate.
I had hoped to turn it in less than an hour...but...I'm not Mark Cothren. :D It took me 3 hours :o

But no matter...It was my first. I had a relaxing day today doing it. Pretty fun gang...Ya'll oughta try it.:)

5" X 6" X 2.5" Finished with Antique Oil and Feed-N-Wax.

OK, Hart! You have inspired me! I have a chunk of cherry burl I dug from our firewood pile last year and it is too rough to do much with...but, this might be just the idea!!

Nice work on this one and nice finish on the bottom, too!

Pretty nice John, good to see you saved it from the fire.

Really nice John, another one for the "ooh, I gotta try that!" list. Looks like it's time to raid the BIL's firewood pile again.:D

I love the contrast of the smooth, flowing curves and the rough bark. Great color and finish. Very nicely done.

Oh yeah, that looks sweet! I'll be curious to hear what kind of response you get now when you show it off. It's one of those things folks around here either like or dislike - not much middle ground.

John,
I know you're a lacquer man, but that finish is beautiful. Totally unique piece, very well done. I finally found some of the AO at Ace hrdwre and want to give it a test run. Keep em coming!

Thanks all...I want to rescue a few more scraps from the pile, after doing this. These are going to be good "neighbor gifts" around Christmas time.

Greg....I posted my procedure for the foot of the Resin Rim Bowl here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?p=1517415&posted=1#post1517415

I basically did the same thing with this bowl....Well...not basically....I did the exact same thing with this bowl. ;)
