Hello, this is my first post here. I'm working on starting a segmented drum shell operation and I thought some of you might be interested. Also, I have a few questions on how to improve my turnings. I'm getting a little bit of tear out near the glue joints that I would like to eliminate somehow. I'm using a ghetto "customized" antique metal lathe with a thick boring bar to turn the shells. I'm concerned it might not be spinning fast enough, the cutter may not be sharp enough, or maybe a little of both. I am also looking for a better way to secure the drums while turning. Currently I'm holding them in the 4-jaw chuck which works fine for turning the outside, but I can only turn the inside up to the teeth then I have to flip the shell to turn the last little bit. I can get it very, very close but it's hard to get the shell perfectly lined up. I've been considering using a sacrificial piece but don't really want to waste the wood if I don't have to, or maybe a faceplate of some kind. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.
