View Full Version : Segmented drum shells

Hello, this is my first post here. I'm working on starting a segmented drum shell operation and I thought some of you might be interested. Also, I have a few questions on how to improve my turnings. I'm getting a little bit of tear out near the glue joints that I would like to eliminate somehow. I'm using a ghetto "customized" antique metal lathe with a thick boring bar to turn the shells. I'm concerned it might not be spinning fast enough, the cutter may not be sharp enough, or maybe a little of both. I am also looking for a better way to secure the drums while turning. Currently I'm holding them in the 4-jaw chuck which works fine for turning the outside, but I can only turn the inside up to the teeth then I have to flip the shell to turn the last little bit. I can get it very, very close but it's hard to get the shell perfectly lined up. I've been considering using a sacrificial piece but don't really want to waste the wood if I don't have to, or maybe a faceplate of some kind. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Jacye, good to have you on the creek!! Looks like you are doing some impressive work and the 'stack' of shells really looks cool!

NIce work, and an ambitious project for anyone! I think the only thing ghetto about that lathe is the neighborhood you found it it, which at one time was bustling with commerce in America's great industrial age.
What kind of drums are you building? I'm a guitar player - I DKS about drums.
